Frozen Food Air Fryer Cheat Sheet — 25 Foods Converted

The air fryer transforms frozen foods better than any other cooking method. Unlike a conventional oven, it doesn't need long preheating time, and unlike a microwave, it actually crisps the coating rather than steaming it soft. Use this cheat sheet as a starting point — always check your food 2 minutes before the listed time since individual air fryer models vary.

General Rules for All Frozen Foods

  • No preheating needed for most frozen foods — the fast heat-up time is part of the advantage.
  • Don't overcrowd: Arrange food in a single layer with space between pieces for airflow.
  • Shake halfway through for small items (nuggets, fries, tots) to ensure even browning on all sides.
  • Lightly spray with oil for extra crispiness on breaded items — not required but improves texture.
  • Check 2 minutes early — your specific model may run hotter or cooler than average.

Why These Times Are Estimates

Air fryer cooking times vary for three main reasons:

  1. Brand and model: A Ninja runs about 10–15°F hotter than the dial shows. An Instant Vortex may need 2 extra minutes on most recipes.
  2. Quantity: Cooking a full basket of fries takes longer than a half-basket. More food = more moisture in the air = longer time to crisp.
  3. Starting temperature: Food that's been sitting out at room temperature for 15 minutes will cook faster than food pulled straight from the freezer.

Use the times above as a starting point and adjust based on your specific machine and preferred crispiness level.
