Air Fryer Cooking Tips — Beginner's Guide

Master your air fryer with these 10 essential tips and tricks for perfect cooking every time.

1. Always preheat 3-5 minutes

Even if your manual says preheating isn't required, taking 3 to 5 minutes to preheat your air fryer gives food an immediate blast of hot air. This is crucial for getting a crispy, golden-brown exterior, especially for proteins and vegetables. It acts just like a hot skillet. Use our converter tool to adjust temps.

2. Don't overcrowd the basket

Air fryers rely on rapid air circulation to cook and crisp food. If you pack the basket too tightly, the air can't flow around the ingredients, resulting in soggy, steamed food instead of a crispy finish. Cook in batches if necessary for the best texture.

3. Shake or flip halfway through

To ensure even cooking and browning, pull the basket out halfway through the cooking time and give it a good shake (for things like fries or veggies) or flip the items (like chicken breasts or pork chops). It makes a massive difference in the final result.

4. Use a light oil spray for crispiness

While air fryers use significantly less oil than deep frying, a light spritz of cooking spray (like avocado or olive oil) helps food crisp up beautifully and prevents sticking. Avoid aerosol non-stick sprays with propellants, as they can degrade the basket's non-stick coating over time.

5. Check food early — you can always cook more

Air fryers cook incredibly fast. Always check your food a few minutes before the suggested cooking time ends. You can easily pop the basket back in for another 2-3 minutes, but you can't un-burn food! Always use our recipe converter for a safe baseline.

6. Use a meat thermometer for safety

Because air fryers cook the outside of food very quickly, it can look done on the outside while remaining undercooked inside. Always use a reliable digital meat thermometer to verify that poultry, pork, and beef have reached their safe internal temperatures.

7. Clean after every use

Don't let grease build up in the bottom of your air fryer. Excess grease can cause the air fryer to smoke heavily during your next cook and will negatively affect the flavor of your food. Wash the basket and tray with warm, soapy water after each use.

8. Adjust for your specific model

Every air fryer brand has a slightly different fan speed and heating profile. A recipe might be perfect in a Cosori but slightly overcooked in a Ninja. Pay attention to how your machine cooks and use our brand-specific converter for tailored results.

9. Line with parchment for easy cleanup

Special perforated parchment paper liners designed for air fryers are fantastic for messy foods or baked goods. Make sure they are perforated so air can still circulate, and never put the paper in without food on top to weigh it down, or it will catch fire.

10. Keep a cooking journal

When you find the perfect time and temperature for your favorite foods in your specific air fryer, write it down! Keeping a small log of what worked and what didn't will make you an air frying master in no time.
